The angular semimajor axis of the paralleactic ellipse is called the stellar parallax of the star. Since the major axis of the ellipse is the maximum apparent angular deflection of the star as viewed from opposite ends of a diameter of the earth’s orbit, the stellar parallax, the semimajor axis of this ellipse, is the angle’s distance subtended by 1 AU perpendicular to the line of sight.
